# Zoning text amendment

A zoning text amendment changes the written rules of a zoning code, such as which uses a district allows, not the map. Also called text amendment or code amendment.

## What it is

A text amendment rewrites part of the zoning code, such as allowed uses, parking ratios, or height limits. It changes that rule everywhere it applies, not for one parcel.

## What it tells you

A text amendment can open a whole category of projects at once, like data centers or taller buildings in a district. When a developer asks for one, a specific project is usually behind it.

## How it moves through a city or county

1. Staff, the council, or, in many places, a private applicant proposes the change.
2. Staff draft the wording and a report.
3. The planning commission holds a hearing and recommends.
4. The city council or county commission adopts it by ordinance.
